I'm having problems networking two computers that should
hook up no problem, so it must be something stupid I am
overlooking. I have two Vaios, one is a desktop with XP
pro the other a laptop with XP home. I have DSL and a
Linksys Wireless-B Router. The Desktop is connected to
the #1 port on the router and the Lap is using the Wy-Fi.
The DSL modem is going into the router.
They both share the internet fine. My problem is with
them seeing each other. I can't see one from the other to
do any file sharing. I tried running the the Set up and
chose Residential Gateway, rebooted, everything it tells
me to do, but still nothing.
If anybody out there with the kindness in there heart to
help get this going and explain it to me step by step in
detail, It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Mark,

You are right. This should work just fine. Can you PING one computer from
the other by entering the other computer's IP address? That will tell you if
basic networking is operational.

Another thing to check is the use of a personal firewall. I think I've seen
some of the newer McAfee virus protection software also performing as a
personal firewall. Often, the default configuration for some personal
firewall software won't even allow you to PING computers on your local
network. This includes Microsoft's built-in firewall. If you do have some
kind of personal firewall running, you'll need to configure it to get file
sharing to work.

If you can PING the other computer, can you use NET VIEW \\<ip_address> to
see the shares on the other computer? (Enter the remote computer's IP
address for <ip_address>.) Even if you haven't configured the Network
options so both computers are in the same workgroup, you should be able to
connect to remote shares by IP address or computer name. For troubleshooting
purposes, I often use IP address just to reduce what can go wrong. If this
works, then also try using the remote computer's name after the two
backslashes.

I am having the exact same problem, both with the network
and knowing how to do the ping stuff. Please help!

Here's how to Ping....

START, RUN, then type in CMD and click OK

then type PING and the name or IP address of the other machine here are some
examples;

PING mypc
PING www.microsoft.com
PING 207.126.99.150

the pc will try to contact the other machine, three times, and show you how
long it took to contact it. At the end it will show a summary. You're
shooting for a 0% loss in the summary... you're in good shape. If you get a
100% loss in the summary, you can't reach the machine. Anything in the
middle and you have some sort of network problems.
