XP Fatal crash

After buying a new computer last month, the computer
locked up and would not allow me to soft reboot. After
turning off the power and rebooting the computer, it is
stalled out on the XP loading screen.

The PC maker has blamed the XP for the crash, and their
suggestion is a full install.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Steve

Windows XP w/ SP1 and all updates as of 10/15/03.

Can you get to the menu that allows you to boot safe mode and other options?
I had that problem on my laptop yesterday but I know for a FACT that it is
my hard drive starting to die. I chose to reboot in LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIG
(approx wording) and it went through just fine.

Try installing XP on top of XP. You don't lose anything not already lost and
it is the best chance you have to get it working again. This requires
booting off your XP CD.

After you have fixed it to the point that you can boot to Windows, do a
search of Tucows for programs that test your hard drive to see if it is
spinning slow etc. It may be the answer.
