I have a system running WinXp Prof. with Office XP on it as well.

Recently, when I plug my Lexar Media JumpDrive into the USB port it is not
recognized by WinXP; no icon appears in My Computer.

If I open MS Word and open the file browser there, I can see it and access
the files on it! I can even drag files from the Office browser window to the
desktop. And after doing all of this WinXP still refuses to recognize it.

BTW, when I plug the device in, the correct "safely remove hardware" option
appears in the system tray so the OS has some idea the device is connected.

If I reboot with it plugged in, then it will appear in "My Computer".

What's the fix?

I have a lexar jumpdrive also. The first time I plugged
it in drivers where automatically installed and the drive
was available immediately.

Now when I plugin the drive the "safely remove Hardware"
feature appears with a beep. As soon as it appears
everything is ready for use.

I don't really know what you are trying to say when WINXP
doesn't recognize the drive. If you mean it the
File "Explorer" then you should try opening it up after
the drive is plugged in. Or you can even reopen the
explore and it should be present.

Yes, I know how it is supposed to work... It works properly on a half-dozen
other XP systems. It just did not work properly on this one XP system.

I found a fix for this even if I don't quite understand what was going on.

There was a mapped VPN network drive that was present on the problem system.

This network drive was disconnected (VPN was not active at the time) when I
attached the flash drive.

The presence of the disconnected network drive appears to have been the
cause of the flash drive not appearing in Windows Explorer because when I
remove ("disconnect") the network drive (so that it no longer appears in
Windows Explorer) then the flash drive now becomes visible in Explorer
whenever it is plugged in.

I don't believe this is how it is supposed to work but I can live with this
"fix" for now.
