XP errors are locking me out - can anyone help?

Hi, I'm encountering the following error messages:

Process ID = 0xeb4 (3764) Thread ID = 0xeb8 (3768)

Debug fails. No icons open and there are no applications appearing in the
task manager.

When I try to download updates (in the hope that something may help) the
check machine fails with error code 0x80070424.

Has anyone any ideas - or can you please point me in the right direction?

Trevor, try going to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System
Restore. Follow the instructions and try going back a few days.
