To: Anyonw who can help!

Yesterday I used Microsoft's official web site to download
a number of updates to my computer (I check for updates
and download recommended ones every few weeks). On this
occasion I downloaded: (i) the updates that were
recommended after my system was scanned, (ii) DirectX 9.0,
and (iii) some Windows XP Hotfix updates that were
recommended by a new game (Sims) that my children were
given as a gift at Thanksgiving.

After completing the downloads my computer automatically
re-booted and came to the screen where useres log on. I
hit my button to log on and the following window and
message were displayed:

Windows Product Activation

A problem is preventing Windows from accurately checking
the license for this computer. Error Code 0x80004005.

All attempts to log on to the system produced no result.
What do I do to correct this so the computer can be used
again?

Thanks to anyone who can help. Jonathan

Reboot your machine, press the F8 key after the memory check, or just hit it
repeatedly if you don't see a memory check. This will bring up the windows
start menu. Choose "Last Known Good Configuration." If that does not work,
reboot and do the same thing, but choose Safe Mode. If it will let you in
in Safe Mode, it will bring you to the System Restore screen and you can
restore your system to a point before you did the updates.
