XP DSN problem

My problem seems similar to Dave's client except I'm
running one xp machine and no server. After loading SP2
I was no longer able to "find" any web pages. My son
suggested I ping on his website both by number
(999.999.999.999) and by name. The number worked just
fine, but the name did not. I then entered the number
into the URL box of ie6 and "found" it with no problem.
He then advised me that I have a DSN (DNS?) problem, but
he is unaware of a solution. I'm working on my laptop
until I get the desktop back up and finding websites by
name. Thanks for help. Art

Art,

DNS (Domain Name Services) resolution is affected by the LSP / Winsock
subsystem.

Give LSP-Fix and WinsockXPFix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>, or WinsockFix
<http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257> a shot.

If XP SP2, Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh winsock reset catalog" into the
command window.

If no help yet, reset TCP/IP.

Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh int ip reset c:\netsh.txt" into the command
window.

And Art, please don't contribute to the spread and success of email address
mining viruses. Learn to munge your email address properly, to keep yourself a
bit safer when posting to open forums. Protect yourself and the rest of the
internet - read this article.

Thanks for pointing me to the several documents, and for
the article on munging. I thought I was following one of
the principles by listing a valid, but little used
address. The article gives advice for better solutions.
Have I done better this time? Art

Art,

Much better on the munging. How's the DNS situation?
