We currently have a SBS2000 domain setup and for sometime
now our only XP machine will not finalise the logon
script. We have just installed another XP machine and the
exact same thing is occuring.
The syptoms are:
- Takes rediculous amount of time to "load personal
settings"
- Logon script fails and cmd prompt must be manually
closed to display desktop
- Access to the server appears ok. We can access
exchange, printers, internet, etc.

This problem is very annoying and we cannot work out why
it is happening, all of our other machines (NT4/2000)
work fine.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Thanks for the speedy reply david.
i just checked and it appears im getting the following
error during logon:

Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. (The
specified domain either does not exist or could not be
contacted. ). Group Policy processing aborted.

The xp machines are setting to obtain DNS automatically
and there are no servers listed in the Advanced TCP/IP
config section. should there be?

Thanks again.

This sure sounds like a DNS problem.

Being set to obtain DNS automatically, it ought to be
getting assigned the DNS server from the DHCP server.

As David says, do an ipconfig /all and ensure that the SBS
is listed as the DNS server.

If not, then you need to look at the DHCP server and add a
scope option to distribute out the DNS server IP address.
