XP doesn't bootup unless I unplug the network cable

I have a problem getting XP up and running.

I isolated the problem to the time when the XP boots. If I
boot the machine without the network cable plugged into my LAN, and after
the boot is complete plug it in again everything works well. But if I
have the cable plugged in to the LAN during boot, XP just hangs.

If I have the cable plugged in prior to bootup, I get my XP log in prompt,
it
accepts my userid and pw, then my desktop wallpaper displays, but nothing
else is displayed; no icons, no task bar, etc. My mose pointer moves.
ctrl/alt/del does
nothing. The computer will just sit there like this forever. But if I unplug
the network cable, the bootup resumes and XP comes up just fine. If I then
plug the cable in, I able able to get to places on the net just fine.

What could be causing this behavoir?

Thanks........paul

On the login screen are u logging into the local machine
or are u trying to log into a domain..... ?

I am logging into the local machine.

After MANY reboots the problem seems to have gone away. I think the solution
was to do a restart while the machine was successfully attached to the
network.
