When I want to get to Safe Mode in windowsxp I cannot get there and a
drop-down window says:

<Windows root>
system 32\ntoskrnl.exe

not found. Re-install OS.

I did re-install with the Repair option and it still does not get me to Safe
mode. Still the same message.

How do I fix that?

I had this once, but without the error message. The cure for me was to boot
from the XP CD into the repair console and run chkdsk, you will need to run
chkdsk /? to find the correct switch.
Try it, it can't do any harm.

What is the problem that you need safe mode...?

When I put in the original CD with winxp it goes into a 51 minutes total
install, and not an a;> where I can run chkdsk/?

How did you mean?

If you have the retail version of XP pro the first interactive screen will
ask "install windows press enter or press R to enter repair console.
You can also try running chkdsk from a command prompt within windows. It
will ask you to reboot so it can lock the drive, again check for the
switches with chkdsk /?.
I have to tell you the last option doesn't work on my PC, when I reboot it
doesn't run chkdsk that's why I use the CD boot method.

best of luck
