Message that appears when attempting startup: "We
apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start
successfully. A recent hardware or software change might
have caused this." The Windows Advanced Options menu
(Safe Mode; Safe Mode w/Networking; SM w/Command Prompt;
Last Known Good Congig.; Start Win Normally), regardless
of choice made, returns us to the same message as above
followed by the Advanced Options menu, repeatedly. I am
trying to help a relative - they insist this began a day
or so ago, and that they knowingly did nothing different
when starting their Gateway computer the day the problem
began. No hardware / software changes (apparently) had
been made. They ALSO, have misplaced all documentation,
CD Recovery disks, original system CDs . . . HELP me HELP
them, please . . .

I'm having the same problem. Started over the weekend.
Windows XP fails to start successfully. Reboot. Same
message as you described. No known software or hardware
changes occurred before this happened. Select restore to
last sucessful configuration from advanced options menu
and same startup hang occurs. Start in safe mode from
advanced options menue. Windows starts in safe mode.
Tried restoring to a previous sucessful start point.
Startup hangs.

I know this doesn't help you....but I'm having the same
problems.

Anybody out there who can point us in the right direction?

Martin

I have exactly the same problemI get the following message
but does not matter what I choose it just goes back to the
same thing

"We apologize for the inconvience, but Windows did not
start sucessfully. A recent hardware or software change
might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted
unexpectally or was shut down choose last known
configuration:

choices are:

safe mode
safe mode with networking
safe mode with command prompt
last known configuration
start normally
"

I dont have an xp start up disc as it was on the pc when I
bought it so cant do that. The pc has not been used for
about 3 weeks now and was fine the last time it was used.

Hope someone can help

Ok guys - did anyone find an answer ???

This just started with our computer yesterday - everything is identical to your stories

What is going on ? Why did this happen ? How do we fix it ? How do we prevent it

HP as well as Microsoft techs are of no help.

Would love some comments/advice.
