I have a 120BG hard drive. The BIOS shows it as 117GB.
Windows XP used to display it correctly, but as of late
it shows total space as only 65.5GB. What happened to my
other 54.5GB and how do I get it back?

In order to get anything back you need to find where it went. Click Start,
Search, Files and Folders, scroll down and click "What size is it" and click
"Specify size". Enter some value like 500000 (values are in kb) and it will
find all files larger than 1/2 a gig. Maybe this might tell you where your
disk space has gone and then again maybe not but it sure can't hurt.

Did you, perhaps, partition only one part of the HD, leaving an OS or some
files alone? I have done this and thought i was the only carelesss person to
do so, but i have seen similar situations where, when the selection is made
as to WHAT you want to partition, the wrong choice was made, creating
another partition on the drive, thereby severely cutting down on the space
available..(?)

I do not see how this would explain why My Computer saya
the total size of a 120 GB hard drive is 65.5 GB and how
it would help me find where the 54.5 GB went.

I did not partition, at least to my knowledge. I am
using only one operating system and see no need to
partition. This pc is only about 6 months old, it's not
like the old days where you had to partition if you were
over a certain size, right? How could I check to see if
somehow I mistakenly got partitioned?

Xp does the same to my lap top also. All files ( includes hidden) only take up half of the what XP said used space, even though I tried turn off system restore.

I have the same problem and believe Microsoft won't give me any answer for it

There is no protected Recycle Bin by any software, totally disable system restore and have all hidden and system files shown but the used space still doesn't tally. Checked other XP computer, they are the same. But here seems no one knows what is going on
