XP does not detect network adapter

I am trying to set up a home network between two
computers, one running Windows 2000 and another running
Windows XP. The XP one is to be the host. I've got the
network adapter set up and the computers properly
connected to it. The lights are lit up on the adapter for
both ports, so it appears to be detecting both computers.
I had no trouble connecting the 2000 computer to it and it
is showing the local area connection in the Network and
Dial-up Connections folder. On the XP computer, however,
it is NOT showing. Supposedly, XP automatically sets up a
local area connection when it automatically detects the
network adapter. I've read that you cannot manually
configure a local area connection on XP. Well, my XP
computer is NOT detecting my network adapter, apparently.
I've looked all over the Microsoft Support website and
cannot find anything addressing what to do when XP fails
to detect the network adapter. Does anyone have any
experience with this problem?

You're trying to setting up a peer to peer network. I
never had much luck doing that. Both machines must use
the same protocol to connect. XP says it doesn't support
netbios and it doesn't install it automatically, but it
can be installed from the XP CD. Normally, only TCP/IP is
installed when a network adapter is detected. I bought a
Linksys 4 port router. It incorporates DHCP so each
machine automatically gets an IP address assigned. Three
machines run XP and one runs 2000. I had no problems
setting up the network and the machines all share my cable
dsl connection.

Does it show up in Device Manager under Network Adapters? It's possible
that your Network Connection Folder is having some problems.
