I have recently purchased a guitarport. It is a device for
recording guitar. It requires all hard drives, cd, dvd etc
to be running in DMA mode, or the installation shows an
error. The error it produces says dma not enabled on
samsung dvd rom.

In device manager there is no options to change to dma on
any of my disk drives. Even though all the help files i`ve
looked through simply say change in device manager.

I have looked in my bios for the samsung dvd. There is PIO
and DMA, both have values, but i dont know what the
different values represent.

Can anyone help? this is getting to be a pain.

Chris,

This should help:

First, refer to your motherboard manual and set the mode to DMA for all
drives. DMA mode assigns a seperate memory channel for the drive, and
reduces load on the Processor.

Right-click My Computer > Manage > Device Manager . "Double click the IDE
channels you want to enable DMA for.

In the drop down box select DMA if available. If you experience any problems
accessing your hard drive/CDROM after enabling DMA this way then turn it
off. "Ok, you now think DMA is enabled? Wrong...try again.

You now need to enable DMA in the registry. "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM >
CURRENTCONTROLSET > CONTROL > CLASS > {4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

There may be a few subdirectories called 0000, 0001, 0002, 0003 "In each of
them (it does not matter how many you have as long as it is in all of them)
add a new DWORD value.

Call it EnableUDMA66 "Give it a decimal value of 1 to enable DMA. Reboot to
see changes.

Also, download and install the latest Chipset drivers /IDE drivers available
for your system board (intel :IntelApplication accelerator / VIA: Hyperion
drivers)

Best of luck,

So your saying if i manage to change to DMA in my BIOS,
the option will appear in Device manager, because it is
not actually visible at the moment.

Yes,

Enable DMA for all IDE devices in your BIOS. Check you motherboard manual,
or contact your PC manucacturer for more info.

The OP may have to install the chipset drivers in order to enable the DMA
mode IDE drivers. For VIA based chipset, the Hyperion 4 in 1 drivers
contain the DMA drivers. It is more complicated with Intel based chipsets.
The DMA drivers are part of the Intel Application Acelerator software, which
only gives DMA drivers to Intel chipsets.
