On a common computer with multiple accounts, the front interface (where all
accounts are listed) is now showing my hotmail acount and the count of unread
messages. Is there a way to stop this? I tried uninstalling the new
messenger I had just installed, but that did not seem to help. I do not want
this hotmail account shown to everyone on the PC.

Take a look at this article for more info:

Overview of the mail notification display on the Windows XP
Welcome screen

The easiest way to turn it off is by using TweakUI, a free
program from Microsoft. TweakUI can be downloaded here:

Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Direct download of TweakUI
http://download.microsoft.com/downl...a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once you've installed the program, go to your Start Menu and
click on All Programs -> Powertoys for Windows XP -> TweakUI.
In TweakUI, click on the + sign next to Logon to expand the
branch.
Click on Unread Mail.
Make the appropriate changes and Click OK.
Reboot to see if you get the desired results.

Good luck
