Some dialog box buttons in programs such as Wordpad, and NTI CD maker have
started showing up in German. I have tried switching to another
language/version of English (such As New Zealand English) but it stays the
same.

The only thing I can think of is I installed Antivir - a free virus
checking program from Germany. Even though it is the English version, I
know in the past some German stuff creeps in to their program (they had
some error messages in German at one point I think). Anyway, maybe it
changed some system stuff to the German version when it installed?

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might get thing back to normal
without a complete reinstall of XP?

I've not had that problem with AVG, however, if you think that's what
happened, then remove AVG. If things return to normal, you can always
download a later copy of AVG from Grisoft. It's free.

Thanks for your suggestion. It's not AVG I use btw, it's a product called
Antivir from http://www.free-av.com/ .

I tried uninstalling it, but no difference so I put it back. It was only a
suspicion anyway.

So, the mystery remains, how/why did XP decide to use german buttons in
some dialog boxes (and in wordpad's preview window)? More importantly, how
do I change it back to English?
