XP dialer/FAX/set up problems

I am running XP Home. I use the XP MS dialer to dial telephone numbers from
a digital address book (InfoCentral). Once the dialer is running it will
answer the phone anticipating a FAX - bypassing my separate answering
machine if I am not here or not quick enough to the phone. I do use the FAX
aspect of the program occasionally both incoming and outgoing. (I would be
more than happy to initiate this manually.)

How can I (can I?) configure the program to operate manually for the FAX so
that I do not have to exit the program to prevent the above? AND, how do I
turn off the ringer? One audible prompt that the phone is ringing is more
than adequate.

Some third party hardware devices can provide a work-around:
