My windows XP suddenly lost internet connectivity the
other day and I tried all the solutions on here, for
resetting TCP, etc. Nothing worked. It would not get an
IP from my router. It got the 169 IP.

If I manually entered all the proper IPs It could the see
other W98 PC's on my network and access their drives, but
not the internet. I finally gave up and installed
another copy of XP. Everything works fine, except none of
my stuff is there. How can I transfer the suspect TCP
settings from this copy of XP to the other one using
regedit? I think I saw that on here a few days ago, but
can't find it now. If it's not that then maybe it's my
Internet security software, but I uninstalled all of that
to no avail.

It appears to me that for some reason my XP setup is not
seeing the DHCP. Does anyone know how to make sure it
sees it teh DHCOP on the router? As mentioned previously
a fresh install works fine on the same PC.

P.S. System restore stopped working also. ALso
svchost.exe is using 99-100% of my CPU the whole time,
unless I kill the task.

Well, I figured it out myself with help from the KB,
after several agonizing days. See the article about
corrupted winsocks library - link below. I was able to
export the 2 winsocks keys from the second copy of XP
that I had installed, that worked, and then imported them
into the original version of XP that had no DHCP. I
didn't even have to reboot, it started after a
release/renew.

Now if I can just get system restore fixed, and stop
svchost.exe from using 100% of my CPU, I'll be in
battered, but OK, shape.
