Having a problem with XP as decribed in KB Article 817571.
All steps for resolution are followed, but problem still
exists when an ipconfig /renew commend issued. Of
particular note the winsock registry entry does not re-
appear after deletion as described in the KB article, only
Winsock 2. Also all logs from netsh indicate command ran
successfully.

Can anyone help with this problem?

try this:

1. Backup and delete the following registry keys

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock (if this is
already gone - don't wory about it right now)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2

2. Reboot

3. Go to the network connections folder, right click the icon for your
network connection, and select properties.

4. Click install, choose "protocol", and click "add..."

5. Click "Have Disk...", enter "\windows\inf", click OK

6. Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click OK

7. When the process in complete, reboot
