XP Desktop won't shut down

My son's XP desktop never shuts down. The shutdown process just hangs. I have always suspected the wireless ethernet card. Something is timing out, out of sequence and just hanging.

Can you offer help?

Additional info! I disabled "HP Center" and now it seems to be fixed! Imagine that. The manufacturer ships the PC with this nonsense and that itself is what is hanging the machine on shutdown? Ever hear that before?
