I know how to defrag a hard drive, that is basic. My
frustration is with the defragmenter of Windows XP. If I
ask a defrag prgm. to do its job I don't expect it to
quit before it has finished the job. Nor do I expect it
to offer a long list of partial defrags it claims unable
to perform. My degragger spends much of its time going
over and over the same ground endlessly 'compacting
files' then when it gets to areas where there are huge
gaps of empty drive space it won't even try to move these
scattered files to join the main body of data. Even if I
turn off the 'paging' file temporarily, it still will not
try to move data into one contigious block. I am both
pissed off and frustrated because I don't know how to
force the issue, can anyone out there suggest how I can
get the defrag to do its job properly? Please email your
response direct to (e-mail address removed),.Thankyou.

Have a look at this article from TechNet:

"Files That You Cannot Defragment"
http://tinyurl.com/l3v3

Files in a volume do not need to be in one contiguous block for your
computer to run efficiently, so empty space between chunks of files is not a
problem. There are some files that do not benefit from defragmentation, and
others that are not defragmented to make the defrag faster because they are
in low priority paths.

If you are not satisfied with XP's own defragmenter, there are a number of
third-party defraggers that are available for purchase.

I would suggest that you just accept what defrag gives you
and not worry about the fractions of a second that you
save by the use of third party programs or by moving your
paging file to a different volume so you can de-frag the
existing one. Whatever improvement you get isn't worth
the time and $$$ invested.
