XP Crashing

I know I am probably been thick here but can anyone tell me why my pc crashes
every time I insert my webcam into the USB port? Any help would be
appreciated.

Windows usually tries to inform the user about the cause of the problem.
Was there a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD)? What are the contents of the 4
lines that describe the stoppage. Or, alternately, open Event Viewer. If
there are any red or yellow warnings related to the webcam connection,
what do they say?
 
No blue screen. I am presuming it is the cam that is causing the broblem
because it is only when I plug it in that the system restarts.
 
Have you installed the software for the webcam before plugging it in?

Right click My Computer and choose Properties.
Click the Advanced tab.
Under Startup and Recovery click Settings.
Uncheck Automatically restart.
Then you will see the blue screen. Write down the four lines and post them.
