XP crashes!! I thought it wasn't supposed to do that

My work computer was recently upgraded to XP. Since then
I've found that I can't access the printers' properties
thru control panel or thru printers and faxes; if I'm
lucky it just ignores me when I try if not it crashes. I
tried to delete a large file from the print queue but had
to reboot twice to actually get rid of it (this has
happened twice now, I haven't tried deleting a small file).
Word no longer imports tifs (the filter is still there it
just doesn't recognise tifs as being tifs any more.
Twice now I've made the computer crash and reboot simply
by starting word.
My GIS no longer accepts DXFs (actually I should be
grateful it runs at all; everyone else with XP has found
that the GIS stopped working altogether)
I thought XP was supposed to be almost crash proof, is it
me?

Sounds like the upgrade may not have been done to well... Tell your IT
department to do it again, but this time install it fresh instead of
upgrading... It also might be a good idea to run the upgrade advisor on the
MS site first to see if your hardware is actually compatible or not...

There is no such thing as a crash-proof operating system. The way any
computer runs is, to a very large extent, dependant upon the correct
installation of the operating system and subsequently performed regular
maintenance.

Not that you have done it, but many users get into problems with their
computer by downloading and installing just about every third party program
they see advertised - even though the OS itself is often perfectly capable
of doing the job.

I suggest you take a look at "Help and Support" and "Take the Windows XP
Tour", both of which should be on your system. They are a great source of
info for your specific problems.

Thanks for replying but the troubleshooting guide doesn't
list any of the problems I'm having. The Hardware and
Software compatability thing freezes when trying to
connect to the internet (probably because of our company's
security settings) and as I don't have sound on this heap
of junk I can't use the tour (I did look at the one
without sound but I don't get on well with pictograms)
I'm hoping to avoid a complete reformat and reinstall as
the GIS only works on the upgraded computers, not on the
reinstalled ones.

I can live with it crashing, I'm used to that as I
generally work with very large files, but the printer
trouble is getting to be a pain. And I did see that
someone else in one of the forums was having similar
trouble with printer properties, so it's not just me.

I don't think I've downloaded any third party programs
from the internet, but as I don't know what third party
progeams are, it's hard to be sure.

A 3rd party program is anything not included in the operating system...
