I have found that most cases of XP crashing and restarting for no reason has
to do with compeating virus protection!!! If you remove all virus protection
in safe mode then reboot and add 1 at a time you will most likely find the
culprit. (ex. charter internet security & avg virus are not compatible).

If you're going to have more than one antivirus program installed a good
rule of thumb is to allow only one program to provide the constant scanning
in the background - called "real time protection" in some antivirus
programs. Run the other antivirus programs on-demand only.

its not advisable to have two different virus protection.....

Depends on the products. Two antivirus programs that lay very deep hooks
into the operating system will cause trouble. However find two that
co-exist peacefully and you'll be fine.

Just like anti-spyware programs, anti-virus programs can "overlap" in
protection. One will be better at catching a certain half dozen intrusions.
The other is better at catching another half dozen.

Again, do not run them at the same time. The monitoring activities of one
program could be detected as malicious by the other. Now you have two
antivirus program fighting over nothing important. Example: Program A is in
charge of real-time protection. Stop program A from running. Start program
B and let it scan system files. When finished, stop program B. Re-enable
real-time protection in program A.
