Hi everyone, hope someone can help ?? When I came into
work on Tuesday morning, the screen saver on My computer
was locked. I had to reset the computer, and when it came
back windows would not load, I have talked to the
microsoft support and they said I would have to format and
reinstall. My question is, I have a floppy drive (a) hard
drive (c) zip drive (d) and the cdrom (e). I have a backup
of My files, but I have a few files that have changed
since my last backup. I need to copy these files before
format. My question is how can I load my zip drive thru
dos so I can copy from (c) to (d)

Thank You

Hi,

Firstly, can you please post the error message

Secondly, Hmmmm .... format and reinstall seems a bit
drastic !!!

I would try the following:

1)Can u get to another XP machine and create a Startup
Disk ? (type Startup Disk into Help to get instructions on
how to create). Use the Startup disk to see if the OS has
simply screwed up or if the HDD is at fault

2) Have you tried Safe mode (press F8 lots of times before
you get the Windows logo). If safe mode works then the
problem lies with something that has been added to windows
(i.e. not the core operating system). Msconfig command may
be useful in determining what is loading at startup.

3) if the HDD is ok (i.e. a startup disk boots you into
command prompt) then you could use the 'with CD option' of
the Startup disk and re-run setup. Install Windows over
the top of the old one (i.e. same windows directory). This
will preserve you files and most settings

4) You could put this HDD in another computer as a second
drive and try and recover the information that way. The
file system may be prefectly readable

Good luck !

Tim

Hi, I have tried the startup disk, I have tried the
recovery program, when I press f8 and the menu comes for
safe mode, command prompt, etc. whatever I choose it takes
Me to the command prompt. Before it goes to the command
prompt I get a couple error messages that say my himem is
missing,my dblbuff is missing, and My ifshlp is missing. I
have tried different options and it all takes me back to
the c: prompt. I don't have a problem with formatting and
reinstalling, but I would like to get them files off first.
