XP Crash

The System is XP Service pack 2 installed. Processor 2 GH AMD, 1 Meg memory.
I was doing some routine spreadsheet (Quattro) work, the only application
running at the time, when the system froze. It would'nt respond to contron,
alt, delete, or any key stroke. I turned off the power and when I tried to
reboot, I got the error signal "OS Error". I could access the BIOS but
nothing else. I tried repair on the XP Installation disk, which ended with a
dos C:\ which wouldn't respond to any dos command. I removed the drive from
the system and installed it an external drive. there are two partitions on
the drive. When I tried to open the C drive I got the message " Drive not
formated. Would you like to format it now?" which I didn't do. I could still
read the contents of the second partition. My question is what could cause
such a crash, and do you think there is any way to recover the data on the C
drive. The drive seems to be OK since I can still read the data on the second
partition. My virus protection was up to date to the best of my knowledge.

Try a repair install on the drive it was installed on the original
drive.
After booting the WinXP cd do not select the first repair option
continue and select repair the second time after it tells you it
already has an installation.

Could that be as "simple" as a corrupted MBR? That's reasonably easy to
fix, if so.
