Have you shared the host computer's Internet connection and configured
the client's LAN connection to access it? This web page shows how:

Windows XP Internet Connection Sharing
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics

If so, these tests should help you find the problem:

1. On the host computer, right click the local area network connection
and click Status | Support | Details. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: none
DNS Server = none

2. On the client computer, right click the local area network
connection and click Status | Support | Details. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1

3. If #1 and #2 are right, open a command prompt window on the client
and enter these lines. Each one should get four replies:

ping 192.168.0.1
ping 216.239.39.100
ping www.google.com

4. If #1-#3 are right, enter these addresses in Internet Explorer on
the client. They should both take you to the Google web page:

http://www.google.com

I just experienced this very same problem...in fact Steve
helped me to think a little deeper and solve my problem.
Here is what I encountered:

Do you have a firewall installed??? If you do, you
probably need to disable it or actually remove it
temporarilly. I did.

I disabled mine, and found that I could setup ICS and the
other computers were then able to gain Internet access.
However, as soon as I enabled my firewall they couldn't.
My firewall was filtering them out, even though I
specifically set it up to "allow" them access.

I tried automatically uninstalling it through the control
panels' add/remove program utility, but that didn't
help. Traces of the program remained.

I was running McAfee Personal Firewall Plus. I went to
the McAfee site and found a reference to manually
uninstalling it.

I manually uninstalled it and reinstalled it from
scratch. Once I did that, everything worked great...
You may or may not be using Mcafees' firewall, but this
may be a place to start looking.

Hello all. I am also having tons of problems with ICS. Last night I was able to share files and even send/receive e-mail from my client machine. Now, after rebooting each machine, I cannot do anything with the client. I performed the checks Steve suggested below and I found that my host LANC IP and Subnet were different than what was suggested. They are 169.254.64.215 and 255.255.0.0, respectively. How can I fix this?

Thx,
Jonathan
