I cannot figure out why my internet connection is so slow.

I have two Win XP Home computers on a Linksys network. One
is brand new. The new computer works beautifully when it
is the only one turned on. But when both computers are on,
the internet connection slows down considerably. When just
the old computer is on, the connection is also slow.

So basically the older computer seems to be somehow
slowing down the entire network.

....I don't even need to be browsing the Internet when the
old computer is on, just the fact that it is on and
connected to the network slows everything down.

I've downloaded all the latest Windows security patches
with no improvement.

Does anybody have any ideas?

Hi Patrick,

Which model router are you using?

linksys routers have an option built-in where XP loads drivers for an
additional device. It acts as a gateway and does slow down the network.
Search your routers settings for a PNP checkbox and clear it. This should
take care of that problem for you.

If you are using a wireless router, you must update it's bios to get this
option.

Search hard, it's only one box!
