"Glacial" is the term that comes to my mind, I'm afraid. If you
turn off all of WinXP GUI eye-candy, it will still be very slow, but
it might usable for simple word processing, email, web-browsing, etc.
It won't be any good for graphics-intensive applications, and most
newer games. (During the public preview period, I tested WinXP on a
500 MHz machine with 256 Mb of RAM.)

1) Right-click the Task Bar > Properties > Start Menu, ensure
"Classic Start menu" is selected.

2) Right-click an empty spot on the Desktop > Properties > Themes >
select "Windows Classic."

3) Right-click My Computer > Properties > Performance > Settings >
Visual Effects, ensure "Adjust for best performance" is selected.

However, with a PC this old, it's essential to make sure it's
components are WinXP-compatible _before_ proceeding. Have you ensured
that all the PC's components are capable of supporting WinXP? This
information will be found at each of the PC's component's
manufacturer's web sites, and on Microsoft's Catalog:
(http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx). Computer components
designed for use with Win9x/Me very often fail to meet WinXP's much
more stringent hardware quality requirements.

Can you obtain OS-specific device drivers for your PC's
components, and any necessary motherboard BIOS updates? Additionally,
you can download and run Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you
have any incompatible hardware components.

No, that's just wrong. I happen to have a 400mHz Pentium 2 and recently
went from Win98SE to XP Pro. I too thought XP Pro would exceed the limits
of my machine, but to my surprise, my system is now MUCH FASTER with XP
Pro than it was under Win98SE! I think this has to do with a 32 bit
subsystem and the NTFS file system. It looks and feels like I upgraded the
hardware in the entire system. And I do NOT use "Classic" windows mode
(although I do have all fancy animation junk disabled, except for visual
styles). In fact, not only am I using visual sytles, I'm using StyleXP,
which runs on top of everything, and gives you visual sytles not available
in XP. I'm also running 3 Samurize active desktop apps, including weather,
a calendar and analog clock. It's STILL much much faster than the same
hardware on Win98SE. The hardware associated with my Pentium 2 is as you
might guess, not the latest stuff. But I never had a problem getting all
my hardare to work on XP. In fact, it was much easier to set up my ADSL
modem in XP; I didn't even need to use the software provided by my ISP.
ALl the hardware drivers were already built into XP, so I never had to
obtain anything. Don't hesistate to upgrade to XP Pro! (I tried XP Home on
the same system, and while I thought it'd be faster than XP Pro, it seemed
like it was just a bit -slower-; so I have no complaints about XP. Win2K
is another possibility. It too ran much faster than WIn98SE on my P2, and
it might be faster than XP Pro).
