First, let me say that I shall never purchase a Umax product again.
Their policy of charging for updated drivers is unacceptable. Other
companies post drivers on their tech support sites without charge.
Umax has lost my business, and likely the business of other
disgruntled consumers, for good.
My experience with the above driver:
I am using XP Pro.
I had to copy shell.dll from Windows\System to Windows\System32
Create a folder for the driver. The driver comes in six parts.
Unzip all the parts into the folder.
Select "disk 1" and click on the .exe file. That launches the driver
installation.
Unexpected:
Although an icon appears in startup, no icon appears in the
settings/scanner folder.
I have to launch the scanner from the VistaShuttle folder. All I can
do from the startup icon is a test.
I got the blue screen of death a couple of times from a warm boot.
The first time, I disconnected the data cable and let my computer
reboot; it booted through. The second time, I let the computer reboot
with the data cable attached, and it booted through fine.
I tried two other drivers without success. I was actually quite
surprised that this one worked.
I read that at least one XP user's scans had a green tint. I
performed the densest .dpi scan and had perfect colour.
