Hi All..

I guess a general question here and its difficult to be specific. Yesterday I was working with XP Home on a high end PC. I had quite a few programs open at once (e.g. MS Publisher, Adobe stuff, p2p program) - but the PC should be able to handle that ....

On more than one occation, and with out any warning, XP just shut down. I do not mean close down in a controlled way - just shut the PC off. On restarting a screen comes up that says something like 'XP just suffered a severe error and had to shut down'. It then asked me to send stuff to MS (was not sure that was a good thing).

Question is, where do I really start looking to find the problem. Are there any logs anywhere that I would understand and could determine what program was causing the problem ?

It seems to be that for XP to just shut down so quicky there must be an 'obvious' major problem that needs fixing. I should add I had not recently added new software or hardware. The only thing I noted was when I started using the Adobe PDF spooler from within Publisher - it seemed to start ..

thanks

Mark

Hi Mark,

Start/run eventvwr.msc and check the system and application logs for clues.

Hi Mark,

I couldn't tell you what is on your system, Lexar makes a number of
different things that use USB. Check Device Manager for clues.

Hi got the following (see below):

Problem is I can not see how this relates to anything. The cause is :

"CAUSE
This problem occurs because the driver for the USB Universal Reader from
Lexar Media, Inc is not compatible with Windows XP.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain and install the latest driver from Lexar Media, Inc.
"

I'm not aware I have anything by Lexar ?

any ideas ?

cheers

Mark
