Despite all critical updates installed and Norton Anti-
Virus finding no infections, the system goes down and
restarts for no apparent reason! Sometimes when on the
internet but sometimes when not connected to a network.

Any answers?

Yes, if you right click on my computer and select
properties, ull get system properties! go to the Advanced
tab then the Startup and Recovery box, click the last
settings box, and then untick "Automatically restart",
then do several "Ok" buttons, and maybe a close button,
and there u go!

In your control panel you can diable windows from
restarting. Under your system Icon/ Advanced Tab/
Startup and Recovery button uncheck the box
for "automaticlly restart" This checked could send you
into a neverending loop.

This happened on my wifes computer. Hope it helps.
