I have attempted a clean install of XP Pro on a system
that was running W98. I have removed all peripherals and
modem/ethernet cards. System consists of hard disk, CD, CD-
RW, SoundBlaster and GeForce2 video card. The XP version
is 2002 (includes SP1). Update advisor didn't have any
complains about this hardware.

Installation runs OK until half way through (some time
after the first reboot) when it says it needs two files
from the XP Pro SP1 CD. The files are licwmi.dll (or dl_)
and iexplore.exe (or ex_). Even though both are on the CD
it appears not to be able to find them and doesn't even
know when the CD has been removed. Taking the browse
option at this point shows no CD drive although it just
loaded all the files from it.

Taking the cancel option in both cases allows the
installation to continue and it then reboots (no warning)
but the reboot fails and leaves me with a blank screen and
no disk activity.

Manual reset allows me to run up in safe mode and the
device manager shows all the drives correctly identified.
I have tried installing the latest video card driver but
to no avail.

I tried to use help on the start menu but get a message to
say the system can't find helpctr.exe.

Attempting a reboot into normal mode gets me the welcome
screen but then blackness again.

Can anyone suggest where I'm going wrong?

many thanks
Chris
