Xp Can't Repair Disc Error

Xp can't seem to fix the disc errors it finds.
I've run the Recovery Console (chkdsk /r) several times and each time took
about 20 to 30 minutes to complete. It gave me no indication that the errors
weren't fixed. Ran chkdsk /p and it found no errors.
After restarting xp then restarting the system to the recovery console
chkdsk /p found one or more errors.
As long as I don't boot to xp all is fine?!
Can someone, please, point me to some 3rd party software that might correct
this problem?
This is driving me up a wall.

Thanks,
James

Repair or p for Fix,only lets xp fix if its available...To chk youre hd

Diagnostic Results:

File Structure Test Result:

Partition 1 (NTFS (40 GB) Result: Failed with critical Errors

The following errors were found while scanning the volume:
- One or more errors were found in the index
- Other errors were found

with
the official file system diagnostic utilities for your operating system.
Seagate is not able to assist with troubleshooting or reviewing
file system test results.

This is the report I got the last time I ran it. (Nothing I already knew) It
simply told me to run Scandisk, Chkdsk...
If you need the entire report let me know.

Bad RAM? Download and run memtest86+ from www.memtest.org. Bad RAM may
cause file system corruption. recovery console and seatools use much
less RAM than windows, so you might not be hitting the bad spot.

Memtest is a DIAGNOSTIC, not a fix, if it turns up errors, you have to
isolate and replace the affected module.

While you're there, open up the case, check the mechanics (do ALL the
fans spin?), blow out any dust, and check the capicitors. If any
capicitors are bulging or leaking (even a bit), the motherboard is bad.
Capictiors look like little soda cans.

Then run chkdsk /r once more to repair the corruption once bad parts
are replaced.

Ran memtest for a few hours and it found no errors in the ram.
The capicitors look ok as far, as I can tell.
Both fans are running and the dust and cat hair was removed. I
was hoping I could blame it on the cat, but, the same results.

Would a clean install of xp help??

It may come to that, but hold off. There's a few possibilities
remaining.

Overheating. Removing the dust helps, but just 'cuz the board is clean
and the fans are all spinning doesn't mean it can't overheat. Once it's
been running for awhile, probe the heatsinks and larger chips with your
fingers. If any are painfully hot, you have an overheating problem. You
can do this test while running other diagnostics

Bad video card. Systems with bad video cards are REALLY unstable. Have
you noticed any smearing, display corruption, or ODD visual effects
(such as text appearing the wrong color)? Check this with your fingers,
too.

Bad hard drive. I know we've been there already, but there's one more
tool to try.
It maps your hard drive based on seek times, it can pick up pre-failure
conditions. It does not care about the filesystem, only physical
damage.

Select the drive you want to test, then hit f4, twice to run the test.

Bad power supply.

Virus. This is where the Clean install of xp may help. It would exlpain
why the moment you go into Windows, your drive gets corrupted again.

if you want to rescue documents or pictures, use the recovery console,
and an external drive. I've used a usb drive berfore in the recovery
console, so i know it works.

Followed the link but couldn't find any downloadable tools(s).
Must I purchase this software first?

The scan didn't appear to repair anything, just displayed what I
think are seek times for areas of the harddrive? Chkdsk reveals
the problems are still there.
I most likely won't check under the hood, for extremely hot
components, 'til this weekend.

Thanks much

Yes, that's what they are.

That's correct, it's just a diagnostic, you can force the auto remap,
though. Did you get any warnings or errors? That's the main purpose, to
check for PHYSICAL surface problems other tools miss.

If you get any errors, or many warnings you may as well replace the
drive.

I did a (Raw) install of xp but chkdsk still finds one or more
error on the volume. I wasn't sure if it mattered but I even
used fdisk to wipe out the partition. All that remained was 8mb
that I believe xp sets aside?.

I think you have a bad drive that annoyingly passes diagnostics. If you
repalace the drive, I think your issue will disappear.

Yes, my pc dealer is in agreement with you.
I'm replacing it in about a week. Getting a 120gb.
For the bench fee they charge they'd better diagnose
everything.

Thanks much for your time and effort. It is appreciated.
