(HUGE) XP problems!!! I have no start menu or desktop
icons.

Can't find explorer.exe from taskmanager processes. First
I tried to run explorer.exe from the task manager,
nothing happens... Then I copied
(c:\windows\explorer.exe) explorer.exe from other XP
machine (same XP Pro version) with no results.

I have scanned for viruses using f-prot(dated 5.1.2004).
No viruses found.

I also ran "SFC /SCANNOW" from a command prompt(replaces
all of the protected system files) No results. Booting at
Safe Mode won't work either...

Assuming your system is set to boot from the CD-ROM drive and you have an
actual XP CD as opposed to a recovery CD, boot with the XP
CD in the drive and perform a repair install as outlined below. If the
system isn't set to boot from the CD or you are not sure, you need to enter
the system's BIOS. When you boot the system, the first screen usually has
instructions that if you wish to enter set press a specific key, when you
see that, do so. Then you will have to navigate to the boot sequence, if
the CD-ROM drive is not first line, set it first in the boot sequence. Save
your settings and exit with the XP CD in the drive. The system will reboot.

NOTE, while a repair install should leave your data files intact, if
something goes wrong during the repair install, you may be forced to start
over and do a clean install of XP. If you don't have your data backed up,
you would lose your data should that eventuality occur.

Boot from the CD. If your system is set to be able to boot from the CD, it
should detect the disk and give a brief message, during the boot up, if you
wish to boot from the CD press any key.

Once you have pressed a key, setup should begin. You will see a reference
asking if you need to load special drivers and another notice that if you
wish to begin the ASR (Automatic Recovery Console) depress F2. Just let
setup run past all of that. It will continue to load files and drivers.

Then it will bring you to a screen. Eventually, you will come to a screen
with the option to (1) setup Windows or (2) Repair Windows Installation
using the Recovery console.

The first option, to setup Windows is the one you want and requires you to
press enter. When asked, press F8 to accept the end user agreement. Setup
will then search for previous versions of Windows. Upon finding your
version, it will ask if you wish to Repair your current installation or
install fresh. Press R, that will run a repair installation. From there
on, follow the screens.

If you only have a recovery CD, your options are quite limited. You can
either purchase a retail version of XP will allow you to perform the above
among other tools and options it has or you can run your system recovery
routine with the Recovery CD which will likely wipe your drive, deleting all
files but will restore your setup to factory fresh condition.

Ok, I reinstalled Windows to same directory where the
crappy one was (C:\WINDOWS). It worked! And all my progs
and other stuff are there where they belong, in right
places.

The BIG question here is, how to repair "disappeared"
desktop without installing whole XP again? There have to
be a simple answer for that. I suppose that i wasted more
time to get desktop work again with all
this "experimental, don't really know how" doings...

This has happened to me before and believe me; I've tried everything
out there from the Windows Repair solution to replacing the shell.dll
file to no avail. The ONLY thing I have found that actually works was
through my own trial and error. I have determined that explorer.exe
is running out of sequence when you reboot your PC. Here's what to
do:

1.Reboot PC
2.Windows XP runs without desktop icons or start bar (blank desktop)
3.Wait 30 seconds or so to allow boot sequence to run
4.Hit Ctrl,Alt,Del (the three-fingered salute)
5.Click the "Processes" tab and look for "explorer.exe"
6.Now click it, and then click the "End Process" button
7.You will receive a Task Manager Warning, blah, blah, blah…click YES
8.Now click "File" in the upper left and click "New Task (Run…)"
9.In the field, type: "explorer.exe" (without the "") and click "OK"
10.Your icons and start bar will pop up instantly…Voila, you're done!

I do not know the root cause of the problem, or how to permanently fix
it; I only know that it will happen from time to time and this is the
only thing that seems to work for me. If you are using Win2000 or
Win98, I don't know if the Task Manager looks the same for you, but if
you understand what's happening, then maybe you can figure out a way
to end explorer.exe and run it again in sequence. Hope this helps.

If the other post in this thread doesn't resolve the issue if you reinstall
your applications or the ones that previously had shortcuts on your desktop
should bring everything back. Reinstalling XP again, won't resolve it.
