XP can ping out but will not respond to pings

WinXP can ping everythign but nothing can ping it including VMware
Workstation 6 based VMs running on the local machine over any VMnet.

Firewall is turned off.
Symantec 10x installed but disabled.

Can the XP ping itself? Or if starting the XP with clean booting, can you
ping it?

Start WinXP in "Safe mode with networking". If you can ping it in
that mode, the problem is caused by a program that only runs in normal
mode -- probably a firewall or an antivirus program that has a
firewall component.

The only way to tell for sure is to un-install the program. Just
disabling such a program isn't enough.
