On an XP pro machine, I was using the default Internet Explorer 6 and
Firefox 9.1 and had the google toolbar installed on both. (the one for
firefox was a
3rdparty/ unnofficial creation from mozdev.org).

I was having problems with adjusting the interface of the Firefox Mozdev
"Google" toolbar so tried to uninstall it followingthe authors manual
removal/uninstal instructions. After that, links with both browsers failed
to work. (Shortcuts on a desktop, XP shortcut bar or embedded in emails etc
....)

In order to open a browser window with a link, I have to start IE and then
paste or type the URL into the address window..

I have tried uninstalling Firefox, Restoring XP to an earlier restore point
without improvement.

Am contemplating trying to re-install XP over the top of itself.

Does anyone have any suggestions for fixing this problem?

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

Open Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Select 'open'.
Click Edit.

"Application used to perform this action" should read:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
(Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the
double quotes.)

DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have:

#1:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,
#2
IExplore
#3 (blank)

#4
WWW_OpenURL

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy should be the same.

Sometimes it is necessary to uncheck Use DDE.

If that doesn't fix it, go to Start | Run and type

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

Thank you very much for replying.

I followed the instructions you sent and discovered that under "Tools |
Folder Options | File Types" I have no " URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol "
nor "URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy" listed. Only HTT
HyperText Template"

So that is no doubt my problem.

Do you know how I can restore those protocols? ... the info you sent does
not address that possibility.

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol should be near the top of the list with the
other files that have (NONE) for the extension.

Well, that worked pretty well. I can't thank you enough ... I never would
have figured that out.

There still is something amiss because although I can now do the important
thing of having shortcuts and embedded links work once again with a simple
mouse click, URL icons on my desktop and shortcut bar are still an incorrect
anonymous icon.

When I try to change the icon associated with " URL:HyperText Transfer
Protocol " and "URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy", I first get
the pop-up message "Windows can not find the file
c:\program_1\mozilla\Firefox/exe (which is no longer installed..) and
secondly doesn't include the proper windows HTML document icon amongst the
choice of icons.

This is despite, the fact that I was prompted upon first use of an IE
shortcut " Did I want to make IE my default browser" and answered
affirmatively..

Any idea of how to straighten out this last glitch?

Which version of XP do you have?

If it's XPsp2 try to Run... the new repair command:

iexplore.exe /rereg

Note there is no feedback from this command and it is done very
quickly so I think it is better to do it in a command window in the
appropriate directory. E.g. Run... cmd then enter:

cd %ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer
iexplore /rereg

Also, this command does registry reinitialization which used to be done
during a boot. So I recommend that you at least close all IE and OE
windows (and verify iexplore.exe and msimn.exe are not running
somehow still after that, using Task Manager's Processes tab.)

No, I don't have SP2. I have a program or two that won't work with SP2,
have an older machine and have read too many SP-2 horror stories.

Is there another way to accomplish the same thing? things are working much
better now but, besides the icons, the email web pages or URLs still
doesn't work, and webpages like Pricewatch navigation methods still don't
work.

It's just a bunch of regsvr32 commands.
The most important ones are given in KB831429

Good luck
