When my computer running Windows XP boots up I get the prompt to strike F1. Why is this happening and how can I get it to stop doing this?

More than likely a hardware fault. Does anything else show up ?And what happens when you strike F1 ?
 
You most likely have a flat battery.

Replace the motherboard CMOS backup battery, boot, enter BIOS, reset all settings.
