I unhooked my pc to move it across the room. After hooking
it back up, I am getting a message at boot up that it
cannot find a file or it is corrupt. The file is
WINNT\system32\config\system. It tells me to try repairing
it using the XP cd. When I get to the repair part of the
cd it gets me to a WINNT> command prompt. How do I ge the
missing file off of the cd without losing my data? Any
help appreciated.

Thank you, but those commands are not recognized at the
command prompt, do I need to replace the "windows" in the
command with winnt?

This procedure requires the WIN XP CD.

Go into your BIOS and make your CDROM your first boot
device, at the same time, DISABLE second and third boot
devices, put your Win XP cd in the drive, save and exit.

Reboot.

When you get to the setup screen, make like you were doing
a fresh install and when you get to the "Select a
partition to install to" you need to select the
partition/drive that Win XP is ALREADY on, and click OK.

You will then be presented with a message along the lines
of "XP already detected on this partition, would you like
to repair?"

Click Yes/Ok to repair your XP without losing any data or
settings.
