Windows XP barely runs after installing SP2 and the 72 windows updates that
went along with it. I have been attempting to install SP2 for the last 2
years with the same results. I always assumed it was because of a lack of RAM
(I had 1GB) and lack of disk space (my C drive is at 50% capacity).
When I run a system restore, my computer still lags a little bit, but is
fully functional. After installing SP2 it is mostly unusable.
I am running and/or have installed the following since the SP2 install with
no apparent difference in performance:

WinXP Home v.2002
Pentium 4 2.8GHz
2GB Ram (I just added 1GB)(when I go to system properties, it does not
always show this information. It reads: Computer: [Blank space].
C drive shows at least 50% free space
Zone Alarm Pro w/up to date definitions
IE7 firewall enabled
Updated BIOS
Updated DivX controls
HD Tune showed no major problems
Ad Aware full scan in both normal and Safe Mode showed no problems
As recommended by DataDoctors: SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster
System Mechanic showed no major issues that were left unresolved
Running a Seagate 750GB USB ext. HD (I have run the above without it with no
apparent change in performance).
Processor Explorer does not show me anything obvious (although I probably
wouldn’t know if it did)

It seems there are a lot of add-ons in my IE7 so I disabled 3 of the 4

I see that most solutions tend to point to malware, but in my case that just
does not seem to make sense since I can restore to pre-SP2 and everything is
relatively OK. Computer works fine in Safe Mode.

I am a little unclear about when I should change my system restore settings
and how I can delete old ones without wiping all of them out.

Thank you for any help!

Hi, bonker,
"Zone Alarm Pro w/up to date definitions
IE7 firewall enabled"
Did I miss something here? Are you running with two firewalls enabled?
It's my understanding that, that would cause problems.

Leonard,

I did follow the protocol of the first link you posted, haven't checked out
the 2nd yet. From what I see on other posts, adaware is still relevant and
certainly not the only system check of its kind that i've run.
Thanks for your response.

There is no such thing (to the best of my knowledge) as "IE7 firewall."
What are you referring to? Do you perhaps mean Windows Firewall?

Daave,

Nope, you're right. Of course I mean Windows firewall. I tried running my
system without it and with ZoneAlarm Pro firewall and visa versa. Makes no
tangible difference.

The CPU usage seems to spike a lot, but even when it is barely in use, the
computer hangs or freezes for no apparent reason.
It seems there are a lot of add-ons in my IE7 so I disabled 3 of the 4
toolbars I had loaded.
Performed diskcleanup in both normal and safe modes.

Thank you for any help!- Hide quoted text -

If both the Windows firewall and Zone Alarm (ZA) working, this will
cause problem. ZA normally should turn of the XP SP2 firewall (which
only blocks in-coming unauthorised access.)

After a week of trying to figure out why my system bogs down and not getting
any answers here, I uninstalled SP2 and sure enough, XP works fine.
I noticed that why it was installed IE7 hung a lot, but once it was running
I was able to at least navigate around with constant but relatively short
lags.

Now that it appears to be an SP2 problem, can anyone advise me what my next
step should be. Does this simply mean it is a compatibility issue with some
software I am running?

Leo,
Thanks for the reply, but if you've read your previous post to this thread,
and my previous answer, you would see I've already followed the MS protocol
for installing SP2 as per your supplied link.
Anything else?
Thanks!

Nope. Follow those instructions and you're assured of success - provided
that the computer is malware-free and being operated as supported. If
someone's been tweaking, they're on their own.

(I know you already have the links for best practices with regard to
installing SP2.)

You need to absolutely rule out a malware infection, and I'm not sure
you have done this. See:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

If you're having IE7 issues, you definitely need to look at this:

http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html

Also, you need to be *absolutely* sure you're not running two firewalls
simultaneously. You had earlier stated:
I am also pretty sure that I have only run both at the same time based
upon advice from a post in this forum.

"Pretty sure" doesn't cut it!

Finally, Clean Boot troubleshooting will help determine any problems
with quirky software:

Thanks Daave,

I have checked out the elephant boy computers page and have followed as much
of that advice as possible. As the writer notes, however, only advanced users
should employ all of the resolutions and I am definitely not that advanced.

If it was malware, why am I able to run perfectly w/out SP2 and in Safe Mode?

I have definitely run the system with only one firewall, however, I will
delve more into issues with ZoneAlarm at their website.

I will definitely try the Clean Boot troubleshooting, that looks most
promising.

Unfortunately, I will be out of town for 4 weeks, so when I come back I will
try the above and post here.

Thanks again for the heads up.
