I have backed up files using the xp back up, I have formatted my hard drive.
Now when I try to restore the backed up files using the xp backup, I can not
open any of the files. I am able to restore the files back to my hard drive,
but can not open or edit any of the files?

This is an ownership issue. You know that you're still yourself and that
those are your files. XP does not know that and it is protecting the files
for the original "owner." You can regain access by taking ownership of the
files.
