When I choose option 3 (everything)in the "What to backup"
dialog box, I get this message: "The files for the
recovery disk could not be created". The first option:
backup "Documents and settings" works well. I am backing
up to a second HD. Any suggestions?

It sounds like you are attempting to create an ASR - Automated System
Recovery . ASR does not work on the NTBackup program that comes with XP Home
version. NTBackup is a watered down version of Backup MyPC from
www.stompinc.com They have a 30 day trialware version that you might wish to
test.

Sorry, but Backup My PC from Stomp will not work either. They
blame WinXP Home for not being able to do ASR. Their
instructions are to load the system from your XP CD (and
presumably do SP1 and all the updates too) and then you can
use the backup disk from BUMP. Seems like a useless program
for WinXP home and I am sorry I bought it.

What WILL do an automated system recovery or similar operation
in WinXP Home?

Thanks, Harry.

Do these products work on a new formatted drive, ie. is the CD
bootable? Or does the XP system need to be already installed?

All of these products use bootable floppies. Or, in the case of Ghost and
Drive Image, you can create self booting CD's to restore from.
