I want to know if it's easier to use ghost which I hate but I can get
over that. It would be nice to be able to ghost from a drive that has
been wiped clean perhaps over the Network, and restore to a machine,
like a laptop etc.

Is it better to ghost the drive and then restor it this way?

U are not tied to Ghost, there are a couple of other Ghost-like
applications out there.

Under any circumstances, restore from an image is easier and lots
speedier than reinstall OS, then ALL of the application u use. etc.
And don't forget all the optimization/customization/preferences.

Separate procedures for disaster recovery + "Go-Back" and everyday
data backup.

"Go-Back" - u wish to return to a point where everything was working
after a download item(s) messes up your machine, virus etc.

Every day data backup - you wish to keep multiple archives of your
data, not just the last set. Remember, you delete data on top of
adding.

Thank you Bob. I appreciate it. I will look for some of the
alternatives out there. One problem I keep considering is after I have
a succesful backup, what will I store it on. The installation is
probably going to be in the GB range with all my programs installed.

Do you think it's wise to place it on another HDD? One that is perhaps
not used regularly, or perhaps on optical media. I have heard some
horror stories about getting ghost to run and write to dvd media.
