XP pro backup fails now. "error creating volume shadow
copy: 80042301". It's been fine up until 3 days ago. I
am backing up to a file on a USB external drive.

Hi,

Usually this error signifies some Windows setup errors. This doesn't
seem to be your case.

Did you installed any applications or did you disabled any services in
the last three days? Please make sure that the following services are
not disabled:
- COM+ Event System
- Volume Shadow Copy Service
- Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider
- System Event Notification Service

Thanks, Adi

All 4 services are enabled. I am in normal startup mode
and found them in the services tab of MSCONFIG. I could
not find "System Event Notification Service" but I did
find "Event Log". Also, Microsoft was spelled MS in the
MS Software Shadow Copy Provider. Is there not some way
to look up the error number somewhere?
Thanks, Denny.

Hi Denny,

Sure - Can you take a look in the event log? (open eventvwr.exe).
Please cut & paste any VSS or COM+ event log errors, if any.

Thanks, Adi
