I read the MS KB article about the XP backup application but I'm confused.
It seems to indicate that you can NOT restore from Win95 to XP but then you
can but then you can not.
Question is:
Can I backup up a group of files (not system files) with Win95 backup and
then restore them to a computer running XP home?
Thanks for any help.

You cannot do that natively because the Backup program used by Windows 95 is
not compatible with the Backup program used by XP. This is not unusual as it
seems like every upgrade isn't backward compatible. However there is a work
around. The version of Backup MyPC from Orilogix has a 30 day demo that will
install on XP and will open backups with the .QIC extension that Windows 95
Backup uses. Here is the link
http://downloads.zdnet.co.uk/0,39025604,39058072s,00.htm

There are versions of Backup MyPC distributed through other sources but
those tend to have the ability to open .QIC files disabled in the demo
version. Orilogix is the only one I've found that has a fully functional
demo.

You are welcome. You should also be forewarned that if you use packet
writing software like Direct CD 3, PacketCD or early versions of InCD you
must finalize the disk as XP's UDFreader won't recognize older packet
formatted disks.

No. The format used in the backup that came with Win95 is not
recognised by XP's backup, or any program I know of in XP. You can zip
files up in 95 and copy them to XP via say a CD or network - or even by
floppies, or via some third party backup programs I think, but not via
Win95 backup

Someone was saying the XP backup deals in QIC files. I *think* he must
have been using a different format in fact and naming files with a .qic
extension - that does *not* mean they are QIC files

Alex the Backup MyPC program from Sonic (formerly distributed by Orlogix)
can be installed on XP and will open .QIC files created by Windows 95's
backup program. I just create a backup on a Windows 95 system with it's
native Backup program and opened it on an XP system running Backup MyPC.

I hope that helps
