I have been unable to find the back up wizard on the XP Home edition disc
supplied with my PC. the manufacturer tells me that it is only on the
Profesional edition but th microsoft websote indicate sit is on the Home
edition as well. who is telling porkies?????

There's a how-to (Step 2) in this article for WinXP Home users. If it doesn't
work for you then you have a special OEM disc (maybe just a recovery disc).

How to use the Backup utility that is included in Windows XP to back up files
and folders

It's not on all XP Home OEM CDs. That is a choice made by the
manufacturer, though it is generally on any XP PRO CD.

If you can't find it on your CD, you can install it from any CD that does
have it. Any retail CD will.

However, that said, there are *much* better options, and when run on XP
Home, there is a basic feature that does not function, though the UI leads
you to believe that it does. You find out that it doesn't work when it
fails. People regularly post here asking what they're doing wrong.

I can suggest Acronis TrueImage Home, which is in the $50 range.

I second the option given by George.

Acronis TrueImage Home
