XP automatically shutting down when returning from hibernation

Hi all,

I have been having an intermittent problem with my XP automatically shutting
down straight after returning out of hibernation (no error messages, just
closes all my windows and shuts down like it would if you shutdown normally).
It has been happening more and more recently (well everytime for the last
week or so) and google and the MS KB come up with nothing (tho i did find
something similar on these newsgroups... but with no solution that worked for
me). I have tried disabling the windows auto update as suggested in another
post (which was for VISTA) and to no avail.

Has anyone else encountered this 'slightly annoying' problem?

Thanks

Andrew

I don't know much about your problem, but I have a slightly more annoying
one. My computer will randomly shut down and reboot for no particularly good
reason. I've been working with some other techies to figure this out, but so
far no luck. I've been told it could be anything from over-heating (which
doesn't seem likely, as whenever I look at the temp, it's fairly cool, and
I'm supposed to get an alarm if it overheats), to needing to reinstall
everything and start from the beginning. If anyone knows any good ideas, I'm
open to suggestions! So far, Mr. Wong here is the closest I've come to a
similar issue.

Hey Aimee,

Your problem is an annoying one (happens to me occassionally). Such a
problem can happen due to a number of things (as you've already mentioned in
your reply).

Just a few suggestions:

-you should try running memtest (just google it to find it) to test your
memory to see if thats broke (if so you should be able to rma it if you have
a life time warrenty)
-instal the latest drivers for all you hardware (since bad drivers can cause
memory write / read errors and hence crashes)
-check you power supply unit (PSU) is working correctly (no idea how to do
that but its worth a try)
-change the settings so that windows does not automatically restart when
theres a crash (right click on 'my computer' --> properties [or go into
'control pannel', then 'performance and maintenance, then 'system'], then go
into the 'Advanced' tab and select 'settings' under 'startup and recovery'.
Then uncheck the 'Automatically restart' box). When windows crashes next,
instead of restarting, you should encounter the blue screen of death (BSOD)
and some cryptic message will be displayed which you can write down and
google (along with 'BSOD'... you will hit more related results that way).

Hope that helps...

Now back to my problem.... any ideas anyone?
