I have successfully installed a D-Link router and have 2 E-
Machine PCs and a Gateway laptop connected using the D-
Link DWL-120+ USB wireless router adapter. All are running
XP. I recently got a Toshiba Tablet PC running XP from
work and when I try to connect using the wireless card
that came with it (and then when I install a DWL-120+ USB
adapter I have the same problem. I see the SSID of my
router, I select it, enter my encryption string and then
get a status message that I am getting a signal strength
of good to excellent. When I check the addressing however,
I still have the 169 address and not the DHCP address from
my router. I have double checked my configuration and even
tried going to the command prompt to release and renew my
IP address to see if I can get the right address. No luck.
Any thing else I can try? It still works fine on all the
other systems.

Have you checked to make sure that the off switch in the
bios is set to off and not standby or Hibernate

check a couple of things
1. make sure that "wirless zerro configuration" service
is running. Start>control panal>performace &
maintance>services.

2. open router setup use dlink manual for how todo that
and look for wirless setting this is where you will see
if encryption it enabled or not. then check MAC address
control and see if it is enabled or not. If it is you
need to copy the mac address of the worless adaptor to
this page. this is the area that the problem is most
likely.

if that fails try and give your wirless adaptor a static
ip you need to know what address your router uses
192.168.0.xx or 192.168.1.xx or what ever also need to
know the dns for your isp and enter those as well subnet
mask should be 255.255.255.0

Have the steps below worked for you? The symptoms also sound the WEP key
could be wrong. Can you remove the wireless association from your preferred
list and try reentering the WEP key? You can do this by going to your
network connections folder, right click the wireless adapter and select
properties, Wireless Network tab and remove the entry to your wireless
network.
