Dunno, but that's just what I've been looking for :D

I'll let you know in an hour or so how I get on with it.

It has had over 915,000 downloads so it should be good to go.

PS: It's a very slow download, the Romanian server seems to be the quickest at around 50kb/sec

I think this is an even newer version ,

Let me know how you get on :D

I must be ill , I think I made a sensible contribution to the site for once

The first link I got a corrupted download.

The second link, some kind of free hosting service, refuses to host the file.

Possibly as Microsoft may consider it illegal, dunno.

So, that's how I got on, not good ;)

I'm using the Softpedia secure US link and its at 50kbs so I'll let you know how I get on :)

I did, eventually, manage to download it, all 330Mb of it.

Installed without a hitch and as far as I can see, worked well.

I now see the Windows malicious software remover in my Start Menu, which wasn't there before on this machine.

Hmmm . I downloaded it and mine is 126Mb ? Haven't had chance to try it yet .

Is the Malicious Software Remover a good or a bad thing ????

I'm sure I don't need all the stuff in the Auto Patch so I'm in two minds as to installing it all or ploughing me way through it and being picky . I've got lots of HDD space so may go for the easy option .

Wonder why my download was smaller than yours ???? mebbes cos they already know that I won't understand what half of it it is for and they were being kind and only giving me the essentials . :D

Used a different mirro to download and got a 320 mb download no probs . Ran it and it installed with no problems . What a fab idea , a must have for anyt pc builder running XP . Neat little thingy to get rid of the arrows on shortcut icons and loads of goodies all in one simple download .:thumb:

Hmmmm I smell a rat....Romanian server you say...Hmmmm not sure I would wanna go there..

You're right, I suspected much the same thing so I installed it on one machine where I wouldn't mind doing a fresh install.

So far all the security programs I have installed haven't picked anything up and I've seen nothing untoward going on.

Are all Romanians hackers/virus writers now then?

Remember, the Serious Sam series of games came from Croatia....

The all new AutoPatcher 5.6 is out and it works ok . You can now save your preferences with one click and the package comes in 4 parts .One main pack and three addons so you can choose not to download some of them if you don't need them . I think its cool took me one and a half hours to fully update the OS I have just installed .

Personally I use a combination of Acronis True Image Workstation 9.1 with Universal Restore, but that's definitely not free, however, I am able to clone windows across different HAL's with all the updates and software I want (all except software that uses license keys, but I have those in a folder to install after I change the Windows key!) I simply change the registry for registered owner and organization, run newSID and change the pc's name, then I run the activation tool, tell it I want to activate over the telephone, change the Windows Product key, and then activate (for some reason magic jelly bean isn't working any more like it used too!) The only drawback is i have to have seperate images for OEM Home, Retail Home, Upgrade Home, OEM Pro, Retail Pro, and Upgrade Pro, but other than that it is a peice of cake.

All in All it only takes 20 minutes at the most to clone a clean version of XP with all of the updates and antispyware/antirootkit/Antivurus software (Freeware of course!) Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice. Also I have hibernation turned off, the IE7 Security settings set to default, and Remote assistance turned off.

August 30th, 2007 at 11:57 am I’m reading the 400+ negative responses to MS demanding AutoPatcher shutdown and I can’t believe that MS would allow it’s legal department (division indicated in the cease and desist email) to create such a public relations nightmare. This story should be picked up not only by all media outlets but also by government attorneys investigating and/or prosecuting anti-trust issues as this situation could not more clearly demonstrate MS over-reaching to control the computing industry and software development community. Not all the AutoPatcher code belongs to Microsoft and it is monopolistic for MS to attack alternative patch management systems.

It would seem that Microsoft has no interest in allowing choice and encouraging innovation to deliver the corrective patches necessary (due to flaws and vulnerabilities in its orginal OS releases) to provide a safe and secure computing environment to our homes, businesses, schools, and government. Simply put, it is a travesty that MS would not work out some type of arrangement with AutoPatcher that both organizaitions would find acceptable and work together in a spirit of co-operation. Again, from a Public Relations point of view, Microsoft has just generated more bad press and ill feeling for itself than Apple’s multi-million dollar MAC vs PC ad compaign. Its a very uninformed move by MS to let its legal department stray from a stated corporate mission and vision to encourage innovation and promote a secure computing environment. Top level management at MS is probably not aware of this bone-headed manuever by legal.

I worked in the personal computer industry since 1982 when IBM first introduced the PC XT. Certified as an IBM field service tech, I was promoted to manage a regional service medalion, then became a buyer for two different retail chains over the years before starting my own consulting and technical services business. I have personally witnessed the evolution of personal computer technology from DOS 2.0 to Vista, from token ring networks to wireless N. I am not the most qualified person out there to be sure, but my point is this: In all my 25 years experience in working in this industry, I have found few products that are as beneficial to end users and support technicians as AutoPatcher. The amount of time saved, ease of use, and all the other advantages of AutoPatcher utilization to ensure timely and uniform patch management make it AN INVALUABLE TOOL.

It makes no sense that Microsoft would discourage alternative patch distribution techniques with the result of worsening the overall state of security in a globally connected computing community.

Hopefully MS will catch it’s mistake quickly, make a gesture toward reconciling the situation and prove it can work with non MS entities for the betterment of society. Nothing short of quickly working out an arrangement with the AutoPatcher organization will begin to undo the ill feelings caused by the cease and desist order. Nothing short of this will reverse actions that could easily be interpreted as a clear example of MS’s monopolistic business practices. It’s astounding that MS would bring such negative reaction upon itself through such a heavy handed strategy, rather than working in a spirit of co-operation with developers who are assisting MS reach its goal of providing a safer and more reliable operating system.

Thanks to Blaze, Raptor, Gondie, Simon, and all other people who have tirelessly, thanklessly and profitlessly invested their effort to help untold thousands of people by offering such a service for which Microsoft itself does not offer.
:D
