I recently installed my copy of windows xp (home) on a macbook given to me by
a friend (no discs available) and althought the progams are working fine,
there is no sound (even at start-up) and the device manager says "no audio
device" present. can anyone tell me what drivers i need?

Presumably you used Boot Camp. You will need to download the Boot Camp
drivers and put them on a CD-R or USB thumb drive. Get the drivers from
Apple's Boot Camp site. The Boot Camp drivers get installed on the Windows
side.
