XP and WORD - Won't follow Hyperlink

I am using XP Pro on my Thinkpad, and when using WORD 2003
and you come across a hyperlink, normally you hold the CNTL key
down and click on the mouse, and it will display/take you to the link.

However, with XP it gives an error message, displaying the link
and saying it can't find the server. I'm pretty sure it's not
connecting to the Internet. I wonder if anyone else has had this
problem, or is it just my machine? Any suggestions?

We may need to know
1. How you connect to the Internet ?
2. Which Internet Browser you use and how it is
configured ( / Tools / Options ) ?

I have two browsers, IE Explorer and Firefox. Connection to internet
is via home network w/router. I wonder if the McAfee Anti-Virus
could
be blocking access, but usually that pops open a little window asking
permission.

I tried looking in WORD to see if there is any option, but have yet to
find anything.

Open Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol (NOT URL:Internet Shortcut)
and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Select 'open'.
Click Edit.

"Application used to perform this action" should read:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
(Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the
double quotes.)

DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have:

#1:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,
#2
IExplore
#3 (blank)

#4
WWW_OpenURL

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy should be the same.

Sometimes it is necessary to uncheck Use DDE.

I have only URL INTERNET SHORTCUT, not the other one. Should I try
to add it using NEW?

Yes you do have the other one. Look among those with a file extension of
(NONE)
